The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking qualified candidates for Short-Term, Part-Time Custodian positions in the Facilities Services Division to establish a Custodian Pool on an as needed basis on the Valencia and Canyon Country Campus.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Director, Custodial Services, short term, part time Custodians perform general custodial duties related to the maintenance and cleaning of assigned facilities (group of buildings, classrooms, restrooms, or office spaces) in a clean, orderly and secure manner, following a predetermined schedule. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
- Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, buffs and seals floors; vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets.
- Dust, disinfects, and polishes furniture and woodwork.
- Picks up paper, picks up trash containers, and empties trash container into large bins. Empties and cleans waste receptacles, including trash barrels.
- Cleans restrooms, locker rooms, and showers including floors, walls, fixtures, appliances and mirrors. Restocks supplies and polishes metal fixtures.
- Washes windows, chalk/white boards, walls, polishes metalwork.
- Performs skilled custodial functions in setting up and arranging furniture and equipment in the preparation of multi-purpose rooms or classrooms for special events or meetings.
- Cleans window coverings, such as drapes and blinds. Picks up paper and other debris from school grounds, walk areas and the areas adjacent to the school facilities. Sweeps concrete surfaces adjacent to the school buildings.
- Cleans drinking fountains. Performs emergency clean-up services resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling and illness.
- Upon entry/exit of buildings may turn lights on/off, lock/unlock gates and doors, and re-set security systems.
- Assists in receiving and distributing of supplies and equipment. May drive a truck or electric cart for delivery and pick up of supplies as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- District organization, operations, policies and objectives;
- Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work;
- Basic requirements for the safe maintenance of College facilities;
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures;
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability to:
- Learn and apply knowledge of schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work;
- Demonstrate successful completion of tasks in the fulfillment of the assigned responsibilities;
- Perform moderate to heavy physical labor;
- Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
- Maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order. Maintain and prepare detailed records and reports;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, temporary employees, students, and others connected in the performance of duties;
- Utilize safe working methods and procedures;
- Work as a member of a team;
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices;
- Demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and community.
Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
One (1) year verifiable full-time experience in any custodial, grounds, maintenance, shipping/receiving, or other construction/trade related position and be physically able to handle the job responsibilities involved with the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Other Requirements:
- A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must understand, speak, and read English at a level required for successful job performance.
Physical Characteristics:
Work environment includes working with machinery and/or equipment, which may produce excessive noise and exposure to chemicals and fumes; working indoors and outdoors with exposure to weather extremes. Physical demands for this position requires moderate to heavy physical labor including lifting, carrying and stacking objects up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally; frequently exerting 10 to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects; standing and walking for extended periods of time, which may include climbing ladders and staircases; stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning and reaching; bending at the waist; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read computer monitor, printed material to assure proper and complete cleaning, and to read Safety Data Sheets; digit dexterity to operate equipment specific to trade, handling and working with various chemicals, materials and objects; and travel from site-to-site.

This is a temporary, hourly assignment, renewed on an annual basis, and is not part of the classified service. There are no fringe benefits and this position is not represented by any of the District’s collective bargaining units.
Conditions of Employment:
- Successful completion of background fingerprint clearance, TB screening, physical abilities test.
- Proof of Eligibility to work in the United States and sign loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109.
